Pokies RTP Calculator & Return to Player Guide

Updated

RTP stands for return to player: the theoretical share of total stakes a game pays back as prizes over a very large amount of play. It helps describe a game’s mathematical return, but it cannot tell you whether your next spin or session will win.

Use the calculator to see how RTP relates to turnover and expected loss. It uses a fixed stake and number of paid spins, with no prediction of individual wins, available balance or bonus withdrawals.

Enter the published RTP, a fixed stake and a number of paid spins. All money figures use the same currency as your stake; choose NZD only if that is your actual account currency.

Use the percentage shown in the game information.

What RTP actually measures

A 96% theoretical RTP means an average of 96 units returned as prizes per 100 units staked over the long run. The remaining 4 units represent the theoretical house edge. Neither figure is a promise about one player’s balance after a particular session.

For a plain-language reference, the Gambling Commission explains RTP as an average over a significant number of plays, rather than a return on every occasion. The relevant figure for your game should be checked in the version you actually open.

RTP applies to stakes, not deposits. You may place a $1 bet, receive a small payout, and use some of it for another spin. Both stakes count towards turnover even though part of the same money has been used again. That is why a $100 deposit and $100 wagered are different concepts.

The calculator formulas

  • Total wagered: stake per paid spin × number of paid spins.
  • Expected total payouts: total wagered × RTP ÷ 100.
  • Expected net loss: total wagered − expected total payouts.
  • House edge: 100% − RTP.

For the default example, 100 spins at $1 create $100 turnover. At 96% RTP, the mathematical expectation is $96 in total payouts and a $4 net loss. Those payouts can include money later staked again; $96 is not a guaranteed closing balance or withdrawal.

Amounts are rounded to two decimal places for display. A tiny theoretical loss may round to 0.00 without the underlying house edge being zero. The calculator accepts RTP from 0% to 100% to illustrate the formula; those endpoints are not claims about an available casino game.

How to use it without misreading the result

  1. Open the actual game’s help or information panel and find its RTP.
  2. Enter the full paid-spin stake, including all active lines or coins.
  3. Choose a number of paid spins for a mathematical comparison.
  4. Select Calculate and read total wagered separately from expected payouts.
  5. Use the result as an illustration of expected cost, not a target to chase.

Do not enter a number of spins as a promise that your starting balance will fund them. A balance can be exhausted before the entered count. Conversely, wins can allow the same funds to be staked repeatedly. This tool does not simulate either path.

If your stake changes, this fixed-stake example no longer describes the full session. You would need the sum of the actual stakes to calculate turnover. The pokies glossary explains total bet, coin value, line bet and related terms.

Comparing two RTP percentages

With the same $1,000 turnover, a 96% game has $960 expected payouts and $40 expected net loss. A 97% game has $970 expected payouts and $30 expected net loss. The difference is $10 in mathematical expectation, not a guaranteed saving from switching games.

A one-percentage-point change in RTP matters over turnover, but it does not reveal the likely shape of one session. Avoid treating a higher number as a reason to spend more. Increasing turnover can increase the expected money lost even when the percentage is relatively favourable.

RTP, volatility and hit frequency are different

RTP describes the average share of stakes returned. Volatility describes variation in payouts: two games can have the same RTP while one has much larger swings than the other. Hit frequency describes how often a result qualifies as a win under the game’s definition.

A counted win can pay less than the total stake. For example, a $0.40 payout from a $1 spin is still a $0.60 net loss on that spin. Frequent winning animations therefore do not establish a profitable session, and a higher RTP does not automatically mean more frequent wins.

This calculator contains no payout distribution or volatility data. It cannot calculate your probability of profit, the chance of losing a balance, a likely session range or how many spins remain before a feature. RTP alone is insufficient for those questions.

Where to find the correct game figure

Start with the game’s information, rules or paytable panel. Record the title, provider and version if you need support to clarify a figure. A provider may offer more than one configuration of a title, so a general article or a different casino’s display may not match your game.

Check whether the stated return covers the complete game, including its features, or separates a jackpot contribution. Do not add a free-spins feature’s return to an overall figure if it is already included. A paid feature or special bet option may have its own information and stake calculation.

If no clear RTP is supplied, ask the operator to identify the setting for that version. Do not substitute an attractive number from another game simply to produce a result. The casino guides hub provides further explanations of game and account terms.

Free spins and bonuses need separate checks

There are two meanings of free spins. Spins won inside a game are a feature governed by its paytable. Spins awarded through a casino promotion are a bonus with separate eligible-game, stake, expiry and withdrawal conditions. The free spins guide covers the promotion side.

Do not count feature spins as additional paid spins unless a separate stake is actually charged. If a published RTP already includes feature payouts, multiplying the full figure by paid-spin turnover already accounts for those features in expectation.

A deposit match changes the promotional balance available under its conditions; it does not by itself change the game’s RTP. Wagering contribution, maximum stakes, cashout limits and excluded games affect what can be withdrawn. The calculator does not model these restrictions or value a bonus.

Likewise, no deposit offers and tournament prizes have separate conditions. A headline credit amount or prize pool is not guaranteed cash and should not be added to this calculator’s expected return.

Currency does not change the percentage

The same RTP formula works in NZD, AUD, USD or another account currency, provided the stake and outputs use the same unit. A currency conversion changes the money value represented by the stake, not the game’s return percentage.

The tool does not include exchange-rate margins, payment fees, withdrawal charges or other account costs. Read the NZ dollar guide and banking guide when comparing the amount you pay with the amount credited.

Keep the calculation separate from a spending decision

No RTP percentage guarantees that a balance will last, that losses will be recovered or that a bonus target will be reached. A losing run does not make an independent random spin more likely to pay. More play is additional exposure, not a method of forcing a return.

Use a spending limit you can afford to lose and stop at that limit. Practice controls with free demos rather than paying to learn them. For device information, see the mobile guide or browser play guide. Support and practical limit-setting information are in the responsible gambling guide.

RTP calculator FAQs

What does an RTP of 96% mean?

It means the game’s theoretical return is 96% of total stakes over a very large amount of play. It does not promise that you will receive $96 back from a $100 session or deposit.

Does this calculator predict how much I will win?

No. It applies the RTP percentage to a fixed amount of turnover. It does not model individual results, volatility, the chance of a profit, or whether your balance will last for the entered number of spins.

Is total wagered the same as my deposit?

No. Total wagered is the sum of all stakes. If you reuse money returned by wins, the same deposited money can contribute to turnover more than once.

Is expected return the amount I can withdraw?

No. Expected return is the theoretical total of payouts across the entered stakes. It is not a closing balance or a withdrawal quote, and it does not account for bonus restrictions or fees.

Does higher RTP mean more frequent wins?

No. RTP and hit frequency measure different things. A higher-RTP game can still have infrequent wins or large swings in results.

Where should I find the RTP for a particular game?

Check the information or help panel in the actual game version you will play. A title can have different configurations, so a figure from another casino or a general review may not match.

Do free spins always have the same RTP as normal play?

Do not assume they do. A game’s free-spins feature may form part of its overall RTP, while a promotional free-spins award can use a particular game version and stake. Check the game information and promotion terms.

Will playing more spins recover earlier losses?

No. More spins create more turnover and more exposure to loss. They do not guarantee that your personal results will reach the theoretical RTP, and earlier losses do not make a future win due.
